At LS Tuition, we believe that every learner has something valuable already within them.
That might be creativity, curiosity, determination, problem-solving ability, imagination, communication skills or a way of thinking that is entirely their own. As educators, our role is not to create excellence in children, but to provide the right opportunities for them to access, recognise and express the excellence that is already there.
This is the thinking behind the Accessing Excellence Studio, our new programme of small-group workshops in Edinburgh, which officially launched in summer 2026.
Why “Accessing Excellence”?
The name of the Accessing Excellence Studio is very deliberate.
There is an important difference between achieving excellence and accessing excellence.
We don’t believe excellence is something that a child needs to achieve in order to possess it. Instead, we believe every learner has their own strengths, potential and capacity for excellence.
The Studio creates opportunities for children to access those qualities in different ways. The workshops themselves develop skills, including:
- Confidence and communication
- Independent thinking
- Creative writing and expression
- Collaboration and listening
- Exam technique and resilience
- Problem-solving
- The ability to recognise and communicate their own strengths
These skills matter, but they are the outcomes of the workshops rather than the purpose of the Studio itself.
The purpose is to create opportunities for learners to discover what they can do.
What happens at the Accessing Excellence Studio?
The Studio complements LS Tuition’s existing 1:1 tuition provision through carefully designed small-group learning experiences.
Groups are intentionally kept small, allowing children to learn collaboratively while still receiving individual attention from fully qualified teachers.
Current and planned workshops include:
Entrance Exam Mock Workshops
These workshops provide pupils preparing for independent school entrance assessments with opportunities to experience exam-style activities, including:
- Maths and numeracy
- Reading and comprehension
- Extended writing
- Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Talking and listening
- Timed exam-style activities
The aim isn’t simply to give children more practice papers. It is to give them the opportunity to develop independence, become familiar with the demands of assessments and reflect on how they approach challenges.
Talking, Listening & Confidence Workshops
Communication is a skill that develops through practice. These sessions give learners opportunities to participate in discussion, debate and interview-style activities while working alongside other children.
They can practise:
- Expressing and explaining their ideas
- Listening and responding to others
- Sharing different viewpoints
- Interview skills
- Speaking confidently in a group
Creative Writing
The Studio is also expanding into creative learning, with Creative Writing workshops providing children with dedicated time to explore ideas, develop characters, experiment with language and shape their own stories.
For many children, creativity is one of the clearest ways they can express their individual strengths. Giving them space to explore that creativity is another way of helping them access their excellence.
A different option for different learners
The launch of the Accessing Excellence Studio has also been shaped by the children and families already working with LS Tuition.
The Studio is particularly relevant for pupils who benefit from an alternative approach to traditional educational environments, including homeschooled and flexi-schooled learners, pupils preparing for entrance examinations and children who may find mainstream classroom environments challenging.
The Studio’s launch has received attention across a number of media platforms, reflecting the growing conversation around personalised and alternative approaches to education.

Looking Ahead
The Accessing Excellence Studio is designed to grow alongside the needs of the learners who use it.
Future workshops will continue to explore different ways for children to develop skills, discover their strengths and experience themselves as capable, creative and independent learners.
Because excellence doesn’t look the same in every child.
For one learner, accessing their excellence might mean finding the confidence to speak in front of others. For another, it might be writing a story, solving a challenging problem, working collaboratively or approaching an exam with greater independence.
The workshops develop skills. The Studio helps learners access their excellence.
That is the idea at the heart of the Accessing Excellence Studio, and it is one we are incredibly excited to continue developing at LS Tuition.
